Yesterday we were lucky to join the biggest celebrations in Madeira Island, an annual Madeira’s Carnival! It is a popular week-long event, during which streets of Funchal explode in colours, music, liveliness and joy and the whole island is getting caught up in the rousing energy.
What's the Madeira Carnival's Schedule
On Saturday, people dressed in bright extravagant costumes get together to dance and smile in the great beautiful parade. Each year this parade is assigned an original overall theme. The mood is actually a reminiscent of the carnival in Rio. But we are sure now that Madeira’s Carnival definitely keeps up with the one in Rio!
We learned from locals that due to Covid Pandemic there has been no carnival in Madeira for last 2 years. After an unfortunate break this year Madeira was finally lighted up with this incredible event! We are so happy that we could enjoy this iconic party! We feel sooo lucky to be a part of the Carnival!
We are living in Madeira for 8 months now. And after seeing many events on the island, we feel like the Carnival is one of the Madeira’s brightest and biggest festivals.
To be honest we didn’t expect anything extraordinary…but we were so surprised! Funchal just exploded in a great outpouring of merriment. This was definitely one of the most magical nights in Madeira for us. It’s actually difficult to describe the whole thing with words. Just imagine…thousands of tourists and locals are magically transported into a dream world of masquerade and music!
This Saturday Funchal city woke up to the sound of brass bands and carnival parades bringing their positive vibe to the whole island, which was continued at night with the huge parade! The great procession of floats came out into the main street of Madeira’s capital. There was so much singing and dancing in a magical atmosphere of music and festivity.
The Parade lasted 3 hours, so our advice: come early and get a front row spot along the street so you won’t miss a thing, enjoying Madeira’s biggest party of the Year! Trust us…this is a must-attend event, which will make your trip to Madeira unforgettable!
